13 November 2024, Cape Town, South Africa.

Aquila Private Game Reserve and Spa is proud to announce that it has been awarded the prestigious Skål International Sustainable Tourism Award for the second time, following its initial win in 2020. The award was presented at the Skål International Congress 2024, held in Izmir, recognising Aquila’s commitment to sustainability and responsible tourism over the past 25 years.

The Sustainable Tourism Awards ceremony was presented by Skål International Director of Sustainable Tourism, José Luis Quintero. The 2024 edition saw a resounding success with 56 entries from 20 countries worldwide, competing in eight categories. The awards aim to enhance visibility and grant recognition to entities within the travel and tourism industry that demonstrate outstanding sustainability practices.

Three esteemed judges from globally renowned organisations evaluated each submission based on sustainability leadership criteria, including measurable environmental benefits, business improvements, and positive community impa cts:

Ion Vilcu, Director for Affiliate Members, UN Tourism

Patricio Azcárate Díaz, General Secretary, Responsible Tourism Institute

Paloma Zapata, CEO, Sustainable Travel International

Aquila Private Game Reserve has consistently been at the forefront of sustainable tourism, earning international acclaim for its innovative approaches to conservation and community development. The repeat recognition by Skål International highlights Aquila’s global standing as a leader in responsible tourism. Over the years, the reserve has not only attracted visitors from around the world but has also engaged in international collaborations aimed at wildlife preservation and sustainable practices.

The reserve’s efforts have been acknowledged through various awards and accolades both domestically and internationally. These honours reflect Aquila’s dedication to creating a tourism model that benefits the environment, supports local communities, and offers unparalleled experiences to its guests.

The local community of Touwsrivier holds a special place in Aquila’s mission. This former railway town, situated 12 km from the reserve, faced severe unemployment after the closure of railway services, leaving approximately 97% of its residents without work. Over the last 25 years, Aquila has empowered local residents through employment opportunities and upskilling.

Aquila’s initiatives have included job creation in the tourism sector, training programmes for skills development, and support for local entrepreneurs. These efforts have not only improved the economy of Touwsrivier but have also set an example for community-based tourism development globally.

Aquila’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond community upliftment. The reserve has implemented comprehensive conservation programmes, including wildlife rehabilitation, land restoration, and anti-poaching initiatives. The renowned “Saving Private Rhino” programme is a testament to Aquila’s dedication to protecting endangered species and has gained international attention for its effectiveness.

By integrating eco-friendly tourism practices, Aquila ensures that its operations minimise environmental impact while maximising educational and experiential value for visitors.

Launched in 2002, the Skål International Sustainable Tourism Awards showcase global best practices in tourism sustainability. “The awards are geared towards enhancing visibility and granting recognition to entities within the travel and tourism industry,” said Skål International.
